I recently acquired a Cannon AE-1

It was made anywhere from 1976-1984. I know NOTHING about cameras, it belonged to my boyfriends grandfather, and was given to me. Is this worth the trouble to try and take pictures with? It looks like it is in perfect condition, I am starting to read the manual to see how to use it.

Would a camera this old still take quality photos? Right now I just use my iPhone, and have always wanted to get a nicer camera, just never wanted to spend the money since I only like taking pictures of my pets. I don't mind learning and would like to keep it, since it belongs in the family, although I have learned how to open the film part, and it looks like it has NEVER been used, same with the battery cache.

I really just want to take better pictures of my dog, and maybe occasionally feel like a hipster.
